Shrimp Imports Depressing Market Prices – The Fish Site

October 12, 2015 By AQUAProbiotics Leave a Comment

shrimp“Shrimpers are getting roughly half of what they were last year for their catch, which is creating both an economic problem and a health issue,” said Tony Reisinger, a Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service agent for coastal and marine resources in Cameron County. Mr Reisinger said a flood of farm-raised shrimp from foreign countries is driving down the price of wild-caught Gulf of Mexico shrimp, causing a far-reaching negative economic impact. “Lower shrimp prices due to imports are a big problem not only here in Cameron County in South Texas, it’s also having an impact throughout the Gulf Coast region and the southeastern US,” he said.

US – Wholesale shrimp prices are falling due to cheaper foreign imports that marine experts say could be harmful to human health.

Eliminating the Need for Antibiotics on the Fish Farm – The Fish Site

September 18, 2015 By AQUAProbiotics 3 Comments

TheFishSite.com wrote an interesting article about the use of antibiotics in the aquaculture industry.

US – Consumers are sensitive to the use of antibiotics in the production of food animals, and fear of residues and antibiotic resistant bacteria in their food supply have driven consumers to shun particular products. This happens not just at the producer level, but to entire regions, countries, and species of farmed seafood, writes David R. Russell, aquaculture consultant, Terra Vann.

Most producers would agree that the use of antibiotics is something they would like to avoid, but for some, it’s viewed as a necessary evil to stay viable.  Although there are times when it is needed, its use never should become a common production practice. It should just be a tool for giving the operator a second chance at fixing problems in their production.

triangle

In many instances, corrective changes are not taken and longterm viability is sacrificed for short-term gains. Unfortunately, the end result can be a decision to use antibiotics as a crutch rather than to fix problems.

The tendency is to be reactive rather than proactive, and such leads to the root causes of poor health being ignored. It is a practice of delaying the pain of correction and of creating much greater problems down the road. At some point, the idea of looking into the root causes of poor health becomes an afterthought, as resources are focused on putting out fires rather than preventing them.

Australia Shrimp Farming

August 17, 2015 By AQUAProbiotics Leave a Comment

Keeton Travels to Australia

The Keeton Team traveled to Australia for two weeks at the end of July this year. We had the opportunity to go to two Aquaculture trade shows and to tour several shrimp farms. The first show we attended in Brisbane was the Aquaculture Fisheries 2015 trade show hosted by Omics International. We were able to meet our current customers in Australia and create a few new relationships with people in the aquaculture industry.

Australian Prawn Farmers Association

The second show we attended was the Australian Prawn Farmers Association. The APFA show had great foot traffic made up of local shrimp farmers. There was a lot of interest in our probiotic, Shrimp Shield, and how it could increase production and profits. This was a fun show for us and we recommend anyone in the shrimp industry attend in 2016.

Australia Shrimp Farming Tours

Our team also had the opportunity to tour several shrimp farms in the area. These farmers and gracious hosts showed us their operations and let us take pictures and videos. We were able to get some info about the Australia Shrimp Farming industry. They have huge potential for growth, but are facing some regulation boundaries. However, in spite of those regulations, ShrimpShield can improve growth and production for the farmers and we have been successful in setting up ShrimpShield trials in Australia. These trials have shown impressive results in ammonia reduction. The shrimp farms are excited about the results, the product and are ready to invest in it.

Great Barrier Reef Dives

Between the two shows, our team had some down time to enjoy the beautiful country of Australia. We went up to Cairns, Australia to go diving in the Great Barrier Reef with Pro Dive. We did a three day Liveaboard trip where we were able to dive in 16 exclusive dive sites on 4 different outer reef locations. It was an amazing experience and we highly recommend it if you are ever in that area. Check out our videos below and see for yourself what we were able to enjoy.

Australia Shrimp Farmers Stifled by Bureaucracy

August 4, 2015 By AQUAProbiotics Leave a Comment

australian header

Aquaculture may be booming around the world, but not in Australia, which only produces $80 million worth of shrimp a year, a small amount by international standards.  Queensland, the state on Australia’s northeast coast, produces 80 percent of the country’s farmed shrimp.

Shrimp farmer Nick Moore said Australian aquaculture—potentially worth billions of dollars—was being held back by over-regulation, claiming that the industry’s growth has been road-blocked for the past decade.

Last year, the Queensland Competition Authority put together a draft report that recommended changing some of the regulations that affected shrimp farming to create more growth and attract more investment, but the final report has not been released.  Queensland Fisheries Minister Bill Byrne said the State Government would release the report in due course, although he could not give a date.  He said, “I am an enthusiastic supporter of aquaculture, and as the Fisheries Minister, I want to support its development and expansion.  …We want to ensure that we make the right decisions so that aquaculture can thrive and prosper in the future.”

Norway’s use of antibiotics in aquaculture at lowest level since late 1970s | Undercurrent News

July 24, 2015 By AQUAProbiotics Leave a Comment

Use of antibiotics in Norwegian fish farming, dominated by salmon aquaculture, was last year the lowest since the late 1970s in 2014, according to a new report.

The Fish Health Report 2014 from the Norwegian Veterinary Institute shows the diseases caused by bacteria are under good control, said Atle Lillehaug, researcher and project manager at the Oslo-based organization. This comes as antibiotic use in Chilean aquaculture is on the increase.

Global Protein Developments – The Fish Site

June 29, 2015 By AQUAProbiotics Leave a Comment

The Fish Site has a posted an interesting article on Global Protein Developments. The aquaculture industry is growing at a rapid rate, due much to the fact that the global protein consumption is growing rapidly. The rapid growth rate is also due to more and more people eating fish. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations wrote, “Aquaculture continues to be the fastest growing animal food-producing sector and to outpace population growth. Per capita supply from aquaculture increased from 0.7 kg in 1970 to 7.8 kg in 2006, an average annual growth rate of 6.9 percent. It is set to overtake capture fisheries as a source of food fish. From a production of less than 1 million tonnes per year in the early 1950s, production in 2006 was reported to be 51.7 million tonnes with a value of US $78.8 billion, representing an annual growth rate of nearly 7 percent.”

The Fish Site writes, “Global protein demand will increase by a factor of 3.5 over a 50 year period, namely from 1980-2030, writes Stuart Lumb. Poultry will show the biggest increase in demand, followed by eggs, with seafood and beef having the lowest increase in demand. Countries have different dynamics with regard to protein demand, with this being correlated to individual income.” Read the Full Article: Global Protein Developments: What are the Implications for the Meat Industry? – The Fish Site.

Abalone Aquaculture – Jeju Island, Korea

June 22, 2015 By AQUAProbiotics 1 Comment

Abalone Cuisine

abalone-aquacultureThe Keeton Team had the opportunity to tour an Abalone Farm while visiting Jeju Island, Korea. Abalone aquaculture is a vital part of the community of Jeju. Beneath the sparkling Jeju surf and the hulls of fishing boats carving through the waves is a creature of culinary legend – the abalone. This shellfish, found feeding on seaweed in only the cleanest waters of the ocean, forms a vital part of Jeju cuisine and holds an elevated position as the “Emperor of Shellfish” not only in Korea, but the world over. (JejuWeekly.com)

Once tasted its remarkable flavor, delicate and creamy, with a firm texture and a clean aftertaste, is not quickly forgotten. When stir-fried in its shell, it develops a slightly smoky flavor. Abalone dishes are not about the strong marinades and spices that many of us associate with Korean cuisine. They are all about delicacy and appreciation of the finer flavors offered by Jeju’s seafood. For those seeking optimum nutrition abalone can be eaten raw, thinly-sliced, offering a texture with more bite and an equally creamy taste as its cooked counterpart. (JejuWeekly.com)

abalone-aquacultureThe Keeton Team were able to try abalone on several occasions. The best by far were the fresh abalone cooked on the grill in front of us. The grillers would place the live abalone on the Korean table grill and they pull them off when they were finished. The freshness and flavor was great, especially when you add a bit of chili paste on top.

Abalone Farm Tours

The abalone farms were particularly interesting and they stick out in our minds because of the set up and simply because no one in our team had the opportunity to visit a farm like this. To see all of the plastic racks stacked into the cement water tanks, was impressive. Each plastic rack had several of the tiny abalone slowly growing. The farmers were kind enough to pull out some of these racks and let everyone take a closer look and snap pics. abalone-aquacultureThese farmers grow the abalone for two years on average before harvesting and selling for consumption. Abalone aquaculture is definitely an interesting sector of the aquaculture industry and our team is grateful to have seen how it operates in person.

If you ever have the chance to try abalone, please do. You won’t regret it.
