Shrimp and prawn hatcheries grapple with two significant challenges: high Vibrio populations and toxic levels of ammonia. Various Vibrio species pose disease threats to these aquatic species, often manifesting as early as the zoea life stage.

Ammonia accumulation in hatchery tanks poses a rapid threat to growth, survival, and yield. It's imperative to swiftly address this issue to mitigate its adverse effects. Safe ammonia concentrations should ideally not surpass 1.5 ppm for NH4+ and 0.1 ppm for NH3. Experts recommend a total ammonia nitrogen level below 0.42 mg L−1 TAN, equivalent to 0.06 mg L−1 NH3‐N, to minimize toxicity during L. vannamei larvae rearing. Even at low levels, ammonia triggers numerous growth-related issues in shrimp. The precise mechanism is less critical than acknowledging the stress ammonia exposure imposes on aquatic organisms, especially juveniles.

High ammonia levels not only depress immune responses in aquatic animals but also heighten susceptibility to Vibrio infections. This interplay underscores the urgent need to manage both Vibrio populations and ammonia levels effectively.
