Sustainable Seafood
Good for your health, the environment, and the economy.
It is National Seafood Month, and there are many reasons why we should celebrate:
Sustainability. Fish and crustaceans provide a high quality protein source while requiring less space, being less energy-intensive, having a higher feed conversion ratio, and having a smaller carbon footprint than land-based animals.
Economy. People enjoy eating seafood and are willing to pay for it. The seafood industry supports 1.7 million jobs and contributes $100 billion to the American economy. In Maine alone, seafood contributes more than $800 million annually to the economy. In many countries across the world, like India and Ecuador, aquaculture is a major industry that supports the livelihood of individuals and the overall national economy.
Health. Seafood is popular not only for its taste and diversity, but for being a healthier choice. Generally, red meats have more saturated fat than fish, and studies have linked eating more fish to lowering risk of heart disease.
We can add even a few more reasons why you should go pick up some farm-raised shrimp or tilapia this evening. Farm-raised seafood in particular not only has those same benefits, it helps reduce over-fishing. Over half the seafood the world eats is farm-raised, and that number is only increasing as we become more conscious to sustainability and the environment.
Keeton Industries supports domestic and international aquaculture by providing not only the World’s most effective line of probiotics for farmers (which increases health, feed conversion, and growth while decreasing the need for antibiotics and improving water quality), but education as well.
